Community Awareness & Emergency Response (CAER)

The Community Awareness & Emergency Response blog provides a forum within PTSC-Online for First Responders, industry representatives and residents who are members of local CAER groups to duscuss CAER group activities, challenges or issues in a national forum. Please use it to share your excellent programs and activities. Also use it to discuss potential solutions for challenges if things are not working as well as they could be.  Here is a link to the Chemical Industry Association of Canada web site Responsible Care section for additional information on this program.

I am posting a link to Sean Tracey's article asking for input on the subject of Provincial EH&S regulations and whether they should require industrial fire brigades to meet the NFPA 600 standard. I put it in the CAER blog as it will hopefully be seen by some of our industry viewers.

I recently came across a Transcaer Linked In group and thought I should share its location in case anyone is interested in following or participating in it.

I found a post on the American Chemistry Council Facebook page particularly interesting because of some research I recently did on CARE groups within the chemical industry and their use of social media.

A recent post on the American Chemistry Council Facebook page caused me to think about the industry approach to social media. I appreciate the efforts of the American Chemistry Council to use social media with their Facebook page, Twitter feed and YouTube channel. In general, however, I feel there is room for improvement in the general chemical industry use of social media.  The chemical industry is in the same situation as other industry sectors and public sector organizations that have not…

October is Transport Month in South Africa. CAIA through Responsible Care has emphasized the importance of Transport Month and is supporting this month by creating awareness of critical attributes that will ensure safe transportation. These include addressing driver fatigue, heavy duty vehicle’s visibility, load securing of goods during transportation as well as employer and employee responsibility on the roads.

Although I believe the focus of the PTSC-Online Community Awareness and Emergency Response blog channel should be on Canadian Responsible Care news and initiatives, until such time as we get some Canadian CAER supporters sharing their news, I'll include some news I pick up in social media from other parts of the world.

Here is a link to some news from South Africa.

The Community Awareness and Emergency Response blog was created in PTSC-Online following my recent presentation to a meeting of Toronto CAER groups. If you belong to a CAER group please comment on this article to help get the blog going.

Responsible Care is an initiative of the Canadian chemical industry but it involves many first responders, transportation companies and residents who live in communities which have chemical industries. Because of this broad membership it seemed appropriate to provide a blog within PTSC-Online to share information about CAER groups and the Responsible Care program bceause these can have a positive impact on community emergency management programs.

If you are a member of a CAER group please…
