We all support collaboration in principle, but often don't do much about it. Every once in a while an opportunity comes along which can act as a catalyst for collaboration and I believe the concept of A Canadian Centre of Excellence for Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Management is one such opportunity.
Please check out Sean Tracey's article on the Concept of A Canadian Centre of Excellence for Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Management. In the past MIACC provided some of the features which the proposed Centre of Excellence might again provide. There has been discussion about A Centre of Excellence but until now no one or group of organizations have taken the lead to evaluate how a Centre of Excellence might be formed and operated. In appreciation for CCEP taking the lead by initiating…

211 is just developing its role in emergencies in Ontario. This is one of the potential ways 211 can help post-disaster in the recovery efforts. In the US 211 has a lot of experience in this area. Here is a story about how 211 can help a community after a housing fire. Stayed tuned on how 211 helped Huron County after the Goderich tornado - coming soon! To build a relationship with 211 before a disaster strikes, contact myself and I will direct you to the appropriate person.
In the wake of the May, 2011 wildfire that devastated the community of Slave Lake, Alberta, donations poured in from across Canada and around the world. While most people made donations in the form of cash to charities that were providing aid, such as the Red Cross, some well-meaning individuals collected items they felt would help Slave Lake residents: clothing, food, household items and shipped those items directly to the town.
In none of these cases were local agencies prepared or even…

An excellent example of collaboration among emergency services and other stakeholders interested in emergency communication interoperability is the Canadian Interoperability Technology Interest Group (CITIG). It is a worthwhile initiative emergency management professionals should be aware of and consider joining.
The Canadian Interoperability Technology Interest Group (CITIG) was created in 2007 to improve Canadian public safety communications interoperability. It is a responder-driven, primarily federally-funded activity, led by the Canadian Police Research Centre that brings together responders, academia, industry and government stakeholders who share a common interest in enhancing Canada's communications interoperability and are dedicated to improving the safety and security of first responders, and…

A project is being undertaken identify how broadly and effectively First Responders are using existing technology, and to gauge which technologies will be important in the near and mid-term. If you have an interest in this subject, there may be an opportunity for you to participate in the evaluation.
The objective of the Tri -Services Technology Capability Assessment project, administered by CATA Alliance in partnership with the Canadian Police Research Centre and Tri-Services Agencies (Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, EMS Chiefs of Canada, and Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police), is to identify how broadly and effectively First Responders are using existing technology, and to gauge which technologies will be important in the near and mid-term.
Some key components of the project…

There is an excellent example of collaboration in emergency management to help protect Canadians from wildfires in the NFPA News - Canada blog. Rather than repeat the article here I provided a link to it below.

There are always opportunities to collaborate within ones emergency management and business continuity program to continuously improve the program, but there is an opportunity coming up in April for collaboration on a national scope which I believe requires special mention. It is the "Emergency Services Management" in Canada conference and the potential PTSC-Online has to facilitate collaboration following the conference.
Please see the events calendar entry on the conference and Ed Myers PTSC-Online News article on the conference for additional information. Ed's article is starting to gather some member comments on the conference and how PTSC-Online can help with conference follow up. Please post your comments either following Ed's article or here.

Rather than providing an example of collaboration, this article highlights the efforts of four communities that are seeking to collaborate on joint municipal delivery of regional fire services. Any suggestions you can provide them will be appreciated.
There are four communities east of Regina which are seeking advice and input on creation of joint municipal delivery of regional fire services. Moving beyond the mutual aid agreements, these communities are looking to share capacity. They are looking for areas which have considered or implemented this type of structure in the past. And they are also seeking out a consultant to assist with developing the organizational structure and financing models.
If you have any insight into this…

I just came across an unusual source for information on managing ER to chemical spills.

I just came across an unusual source for information on managing ER to chemical spills. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the US Department of Commerce has an excellent web page that collects links to training, software and other tools for managing ER. Since I couldn't find a blog or wiki on the site for sharing useful links, I've created this article. Please share anything that you're aware of, that you think would be useful for others.
