Emergency Management and Business Continuity Program Accreditation
Emergency management and business continuity programs are essential to protect people, property, our environment and the economy from natural, technological and human caused disasters. Standards for emergency management and business continuity programs require periodic program evaluation to ensure they will effectively protect life, property, the environment and the economy in the event of an emergency. But how effectively are the programs we depend on being evaluated? Although some provinces require ministry and municipal programs to be reviewed annually, Canadian public sector programs in general are not evaluated as extensively as industry programs or their counterparts in the United States.
The purpose of the PTSC-Online accreditation section is to provide a forum for Canadian entities to discuss and evaluate options for evaluating and accrediting Canadian emergency management programs to Canadian standards to better support continuous improvement of our programs.

I placed this notice in the Accreditation blog channel because it involves and emergency management / business continuity program evaluation process. RI CANADA has developed a rigorous assessment process that evaluates all entries for the Award of Excellence program. Do you know of anyone's program which qualifies for this award?

I just learned that the CSA Z1600 emergency management and business continuity standard may play a part in the accreditation program for Canadian hospitals.
I used the NFPA 1600 standard quite effectively for upgrading a hospital emergency management program before CSA Z1600 was available, so I was quite excited to hear that CSA Z1600 may play a part in the hospital accreditation program. I have requested an article for our PTSC-Online accreditation blog from those who are directly involved and I anxiously look forward to that article and learning the details.

This is a demonstration article for the accreditation blog. There are approximately 30 Canadians who support emergency management program accreditation and who have been trained as Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) assessors.
As an EMAP trained assessor myself, I appreciate the value of being trained on how to conduct an assessment of an emergency management program. I also appreciate the model EMAP has developed which makes pursuing program accreditation through EMAP and very economical way to pursue ccreditation compared to some other options.
I added this blog entry for two purposes, (1) to add some material so you can better see how PTSC-Online can work and (2) to call upon all Canadian EMAP assessors to join…

If you are not familiar with the program which has been very successfully running in the United States for several years to help public sector entities evaluate their emergency management programs, click on their logo (above) and check out their web site. EMAP not only provides resources to help evaluate programs but provides a cost effective accreditation process for those programs which meet the EMAP standard.
Approximately thirty Canadians have been trained as EMAP Assessors and several Canadian organizations and individuals have been working to make EMAP accreditation to the Canadian Z1600 emergency management and business continuity standard available to Canadian public and private sector entities.
The PTSC-Online resources and collaboration tools are available to help make EMAP accreditation available to Canadian entities.
