Amateur Radio Emergency Service

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service web site sponsored by the Radio Amateurs of Canada provides information on how licensed radio operators can supplement community emergency management programs. In addition to providing additional communication, involving amateur radio operators on a community emergency management program is an excellent way to involve the public and increase public knowledge and support for community emergency management.

ARES is composed of licenced radio amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service, when disaster strikes. Every licenced radio amateur, whether or not a member of RAC or of any other local or regional organization, is eligible for membership in the Amateur Radio Emergency Service. The only qualification is a sincere desire to serve. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable but not a requirement. Training is accomplished locally, using documents provided by or through RAC. And RAC has its own national ARES Operations Training Manual.
