Be Disaster Ready!
Just in time for Emergency Preparedness Week (May 1 - 7, 2011), Be Disaster Ready! goes mobile!
BDR! is a unique public outreach program that teaches Niagara's youth how to prepare for a range of community hazards that could affect them and their families. Applied, realistic learning is the focus of the program. It's about creating a culture of preparedness...simply stated, children can lead by example in influencing adult behaviours, compelling us to take steps to prepare for the unexpected. All students who complete BDR! are able to:
1. Describe a disaster or hazard and appreciate the range of community impacts;
2. Learn appropriate preparedness behaviours to adopt;
3. Recognize the importance of a Ready Bag and what key survival items are required;
4. Experience a simulated emergency situation; and
5. Identify the range of emotions related to a disaster experience.
And, to get started, all students receive their own Ready Bag! For additional information about BDR!, please contact Paula-Marie Saric at (905) 685-1571 ext. 3595 or via email at paula-marie.saric@niagararegion.ca
